The Picture of Five Cows is a work by Han Huang, a painter from the Tang Dynasty. It is the earliest paper and silk painting with cows as the subject among the works currently in existence. The Five Oxen Picture was successively collected by Zhao Gou, Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty, Zhao Bo'ang and Zhao Mengxi of the Yuan Dynasty, and Qianlong, the Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Qianlong kept the Five Oxen Picture in the Forbidden City until 1900, when the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded China. The whereabouts of the Five Oxen Picture were unknown for a long period of time. time. It was not until the 1950s that the Five Oxen Picture appeared at an auction in Hong Kong. It was eventually purchased back by China for HK$60,000. It became one of China's top ten famous paintings handed down from generation to generation and was hailed as the "treasure of the country". "Five Cows" is colored on paper, made of linen paper, 20.8 cm long and 139.8 cm wide. It is China's earliest paper animal painting and has a history of more than 1,300 years. This picture scroll is lined up from right to left, with five cows in different postures drawn. Apart from the five cows, there is only a small bush of thorns in the picture without any other background. This kind of painting fully highlights the theme. The composition is extremely bold, fully demonstrating Han Huang's superb realistic depiction ability.
